“Pass the Music” Events Help Launch New Backstage 365 Club

Bread & Roses board member Alex Wellins recently sponsored the first "Pass the Music" lunchtime event at The Blueshirt Group in San Francisco. The idea was born while brainstorming at a January board planning session as a way of cultivating the younger high tech workforce to learn about our mission and to become involved in supporting our organization. We are grateful that Alex came up with the concept and offered to host the first event at his impressive office in downtown San Francisco.

On April 14, he invited employees from his own company and the Next 15 Communications Group to lunch to hear performer Megan Slankard. Alex welcomed us and Executive Director Dave Perron spoke of B & R’s mission and gave a pitch for our new Backstage 365 Club, which offers the opportunity to go behind-the-scenes with exclusive members-only events and concerts. The hundred or so attendees also had the chance to participate in a free raffle for a signed poster from last year’s Keb’ Mo’ B & R benefit concert at the Sweetwater, a baseball autographed by SF Giants player Brandon Crawford and a one-year club membership.

The guests at the Blueshirt event enjoyed sandwiches while Megan performed an upbeat concert with original songs from her CD “Running On Machinery” and familiar songs like Paul Simon’s Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard. She talked about her experiences as a performer sharing her talents with a variety of isolated audiences. A singer-songwriter & guitarist, she has been B & R volunteer since she was thirteen. With her energetic presence and compelling songs, she has played in mental health and juvenile detention facilities, special needs schools as well as drug and alcohol recovery centers. Several attendees, inspired by her noontime concert, signed up to volunteer.

After this successful event, Alex also arranged for us to go down to Redwood City to Rocket Fuel Inc. for a noontime “Pass the Music” concert. Culture Program Manager Britt Bowe and her team graciously hosted us on April 21 for a barbecue for about 200 employees. B&R performers Lara Price and Wil Roberts played a spirited set of cover tunes ranging from Dock of the Bay to No One by Alicia Keys that were enjoyed by everyone. The raffle included an autographed baseball by Reggie Jackson.

Lara, a rootsy blues singer, has performed several well-received concerts for B & R drug and alcohol recovery audiences at the Harbor Light Center and HealthRight360 Walden House in San Francisco. A performer in the audience signed up afterwards to volunteer.

We enjoyed meeting everyone and making new friends at these two lunchtime events where a new demographic of people were introduced to the work of Bread & Roses Presents. For more info about our new club, or to sponsor a "Pass the Music" event, visit
